I started out tutoring several medical students and editing their dissertations or research papers. I found communication to be very seamless because I could relate to them, which made for a successful partnership. With my background being in anthropology, I have a natural interest in other cultures and ways of thinking. For me, the role of an editor highly requires a sort of immersion into the mind of the writer in order to understand the framework of their project. I used these abilities to help me to grow into the kind of editor that I wanted to be by remaining open and curious about each client’s wants and needs.
As an editor, it is important to be aware of your role. Many authors see what they have created as their baby. My role is not to take over, but only to use my abilities as a guide. Doing this type of work is important to me because it allows me to see the world from a perspective that’s different from the one I grew up in. I’m also able to create new ways of connecting with others. Most importantly, I’m doing the work of serving others. I recognize the specific challenges and opportunities faced by people of color and women, therefore it’s important to me to serve these individuals in my community as a way of giving back.
